Cuando descubrí Internet allá por 1994 mis primeras búsquedas de información fueron sobre hackers, literatura ciberpunk y manga. Ahora muchas de aquellas cosas resultan añejas y propias de una época, como el concepto de «cibercultura» o mis lecturas de Derrick de Kerckhove y Mark Dery.

De aquellos tiempos recuerdo una entrevista a William Gibson de 1995 que milagrosamente ha sobrevivido en Internet en su formato original. Recordaba Gibson:

I was watching CNN during the riots of Los Angeles a couple of years ago and they were showing video footage of a mob looting a Radio Shack. Running out of the Radio Shack was hi-fis, video cameras and everything they could pick up. But the Radio Shack was right next to a Macintosh dealership which had powerbooks in the window. And it was untouched. So here these incredible valuable portable very, very powerful computers was sitting untouched behind an unbroken shop-window while the poor people steal Sony Walkmans.

Tras los recientes disturbios en Inglaterra, donde se produjeron saqueos en establecimientos comerciales, los portavoces de las cadenas de librerías Waterstone’s y W H Smith informaron que no tenían constancia de que alguno de sus establecimientos hubiera sufrido daños.
